The 2005 Red Swain Memorial Tourney
by Rich Rackauskas
On August 13 -14 2005, the I Street Bathhouse held its annual
Red Swain Memorial Tourney. The first day of action
was intense as the
temp reached 90 degrees with 100% humidity. After 8 hours of play we
were left with the final four
teams, three of them from South
Boston. Semi #1 saw Hall of Famer Cliff Swain and his partner
Bernie Goodman
take on Jerry Osullivan and Matt S. The game was tight until
the halfway mark when Swain delivered some blistering
serves along with
Goodman hitting perfect pinches to take the game 21-11.
Semi #2 saw IRT #9 in the world Josh Tucker and his partner
Jim Grant take on Mike Daly and Tommy Connolly. A
close game
throughout the match with Tucker serving some of the fastest serves of the day.
Daly and Connolly hung
tough and with Connolly hitting killshots from
65 feet back and Daly pinching everything in the corners, the game
swayed
from Tucker and Grant, as they had a 20-18 lead, only to lose the game in the end 21-20.
The finals were set as Swain and Goodman took on Daly and Connolly in a single
game to 31, winner take all! Swain
and Goodman started out slow as
Daly and Connolly took a big lead early. Halfway through the game Goodman
warmed
up and started hitting some nice pinch shots. Swain also stepped it up as he served up some aces and great deep
ball passes. Not ones to give up, Daly and Connolly started hitting great passes deep in the court. The
game was close
again as it was now 26-26. Swain and Goodman got on a roll
though, and closed the match out for a 31-28 win.
The biggest impression of this years event was not only the quality of players that showed up, but the court dimensions!
There may not be a court like this anywhere in the world, but the court is 25’ x 80’ long with half a ceiling going 40’ back.
The court is brutal on players and it became rapidly apparent who was in shape and who wasn’t! This is one event you
won’t want to miss. Can’t wait until next year!
